Physical Education & Wellness

Physical Education courses help students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead active, healthy lifestyle. Career and Life Management (CALM) equips them with the necessary skills to make healthy, well-informed decisions and choices throughout their lives.

Both Physical Education 10 and CALM 20 are required to attain an Alberta High School Diploma, and both subjects can be taken together at CFL Summer School. If desired, students may also enroll in Wellness 10, where they can earn additional credits in Nutrition. Students with a keen interest in health and wellness can also enroll in Sport Exploration 15.

Physical Education 10

Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 9 Physical Education
Credits: 3

Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. In this course, you’ll participate in two weeks of activity from all five dimensions of the PE curriculum:

  • Alternative environments
  • Dance
  • Games
  • Flexibility development
  • Individual activities

Students will also have a full day of first aid education.

Locations: Memorial Composite High School and Woodhaven Middle School (in-person)

Physical Education 10 & CALM 20

IP $

Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 9 Physical Education. Students attending Spruce Grove Composite High School in the fall are encouraged to take both CALM and PE together.
Credits: 6

This course combines PE 10 and CALM 20.

Physical Education 10 develops the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. In this course, you’ll participate in two weeks of activity from all five dimensions of the PE curriculum:

  • Alternative Environments
  • Dance
  • Games
  • Flexibility development
  • Individual activities

Students will also have a full day of first aid education.

Career and Life Management (CALM) 20 explores the various steps of personal development, and equips yourself with the necessary skills to make healthy, well-informed decisions and choices throughout your life. Themes of the course include personal choices, resource choices, and career and life choices. Please note: CALM 20 will be completed through Virtual Learning.

Students will leave the course with an online portfolio that includes:

  • Resume & Cover Letter
  • High School Academic Progress 
  • Goal setting, learning preferences, personality, interest, knowledge and motivation profiles that help students explore career pathways 
  • Budget and finance tools 
  • Mental health guides

Wellness 10

Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 9 Physical Education
Credits: 8

Wellness 10 is an eight-credit course where students will receive three credits for Physical Education 10, five credits for Career and Life Management 20, HCS3000 and CTR 1010. This course meets the minimum high school graduation requirements for Physical Education 10 and Career and Life Management. Please note: CALM 20 will be completed through Virtual Learning.

The objective of this course is to help students develop their life and recreational skills, encouraging them to participate in an active lifestyle while making informed choices. Wellness 10 will include a blended learning approach to suit all student needs.

Sport Exploration 15

VL

Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 9 Physical Education
Credits: 3

Sports Performance 15 is intended to provide students with the tools to become the best version of themselves while encouraging them to achieve a healthier lifestyle. This course is perfect for students who want to challenge themselves because its goal is to enhance their knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding sport, activity, sports psychology, training, nutritional science, athletic development and leadership. 

Students will have the option to earn the following credits by completing this program:
  • REC 1040 Foundations for Training 1 - Students apply basic training and movement principles to health-related and performance-related components of fitness training. Students create fitness activities and develop a basic individual fitness plan to achieve goals for health-related and performance-related components.
     
  • REC 1050 Sports Psychology 1 - Students assess the impact of mental fitness on optimal sport, artistic and/or academic performance and motivation. Students examine and demonstrate strategies to strengthen mental fitness, including relaxation, visualization and positive self-talk.
     
  • REC 2010 Nutrition for Recreation Activities and Sport - Students explain the role of food and hydration in helping individuals achieve optimal physical performance for recreational physical activities and sport. Students acquire knowledge and skills to plan effectively for nutrition and hydration related to a variety of recreational activities and athletic events. Students examine food labelling and the role of recreation leaders and coaches related to promoting nutrition for performance.

Physical Education 20

Prerequisite: Completion of Physical Education 10 or Wellness 10
Credits: 3

Physical Education 20 will be offered as a three credit course.

This course is a continuation of Physical Education 10 and Wellness 10, which features a variety of new and exciting sports and activities that may not have been experienced in the prerequisite course. Some of these activities include:

  • Bowling
  • Billiards
  • Archery
  • Rock climbing
