These courses are for students who have demonstrated strengths in their use of language and their understanding of print and non-print texts. The "-1" signifies the more academically rigorous sequence.
In English 10-1, 20-1, 30-1, students study literature and writing that is both complex and formal. Print and non-print texts become increasingly more involved at each grade level. Students will write both personal responses and literary compositions based upon the works they have studied.
The English 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 route demands a considerable amount of reading, homework, and study time. English 30-1 is a course intended for students who wish to earn a high school diploma and enrol in degree programs at post-secondary institutions. A final grade of 60% or better in English 10-1 and English 20-1 is recommended for students to continue in the 20-1 or 30-1 program. Students who earn a final grade of 50-59% should register in English 20-2 or 30-2.
