Students develop successful employment search skills and a personal employment search portfolio.

Building Construction Level 1

Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 9
Credits: 5
Location: Spruce Grove Composite High School (1000 Calahoo Road, Spruce Grove)

Students will create personal projects to take home, including tables, stools, implements and more.

CTS modules covered:

  • CON1010 Construction Tools & Materials: Students develop basic hand tool and production skills to transform common building materials safely into useful products.
     
  • CON1120 Product Management: Students develop basic shop drawing and estimating skills and apply them to build a product.
     
  • CON1130 Solid Stock Construction: Students develop basic hand and power tool skills to build a product made from solid wood.
     
  • CON1140 Turning Operations: Students use wood turning equipment and techniques to create a faceplate and spindle turning made from solid and/or built-up stock.
     
  • CON1160 Manufactured Materials: Students select and use the appropriate materials and tools to build a product or structure from a wood composite or another manufactured material.

 

Building Construction Level 2

CTS modules covered:

  • CON2130 Furniture - Box Construction: Students develop basic joinery skills and knowledge related to case construction by producing a box-type piece of furniture.
     
  • CON2140 Furniture - Frame & Panel: Students use solid and/or composite materials to build a frame and panel product or component.
     
  • CON2150 Finishing & Refinishing: Students use knowledge of finishing materials and finishing techniques to apply new and replacement finishes.
     
  • CON2160 Cabinetmaking - Web & Face Frame: Students apply web and face frame construction techniques and use solid and/or manufactured materials to produce a built-in or modular cabinet.
     
  • CON2170 Cabinetmaking - Door & Drawer: Students use solid and composite materials to develop skills in building cabinet doors and drawers.

 

Cosmetology & Esthetics

Students will learn personal service fundamentals.

CTS modules covered:

  • COS1010 Personal & Professional Practices: Students develop increased appreciation for the significance of personal grooming in various life situations, as well as the knowledge and skills required to maintain a personal health and safety plan.
     
  • COS1020 Long Hair Design 1: Students handle hair confidently, brush, comb and part hair correctly and create ropes, knots and two- or three-strand braids.
     
  • COS1910 Cos Project A: Students develop project design and management skills to extend and enhance competencies and skills in other CTS courses through contexts that are personally relevant.
     
  • EST1020 Skin Care Practices: Students identify the basic structures and functions of the skin. Students analyze skin and perform basic skin care practices, including cleansing, toning, nourishing and protecting.
     
  • EST1025 Skin Care Practices - Client Services: Students conduct a consultation with a client during which they analyze the client’s needs and recommend and perform the appropriate services.

Fabrication & Welding Level 1

Students will learn welding basics and create projects to take home.

CTS modules covered:

  • FAB1010 Fabrication Tools & Materials: Students develop knowledge and skills in the use of basic hand tools and materials used in fabrication processes, and safely transform common metals into useful products.
     
  • FAB1040 Oxyacetylene Welding: Students develop basic skills in the safe handling and operation of oxyacetylene equipment.
     
  • FAB1048 Semi-Automated / Automated Welding: Students develop basic knowledge and skills related to the use of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) processes in both personal use and commercial applications. They also develop introductory knowledge of Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) processes.
     
  • FAB1050 Basic Electric Welding: Students develop basic skills related to the safe use and operation of one or more common electric welding processes.
     
  • FAB1100 Fabrication Principles: Students investigate and apply fundamental principles of fabrication to build an artifact or structure from common structural materials.

Fabrication & Welding Level 2

Students will learn welding basics and create projects to take home.

CTS modules covered:

  • FAB2030 Oxyfuel Welding: Students develop basic skills in the safe and efficient use of oxyfuel equipment and supplies to braze and fusion weld.
     
  • FAB2048 Flux Cored Arc Welding 1: Students develop an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) processes, and they gain experience using FCAW processes by performing flat, horizontal and vertical fillet welds and flat groove welds.
     
  • FAB2050 Arc Welding 1: Students develop basic knowledge, skills and attitudes related to the operation and use of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) equipment and accessories to make a variety of welds in the flat position.
     
  • FAB2060 Arc Welding 2: Students identify appropriate electrodes by visually assessing a weld and making the necessary adjustments to improve weld quality while developing horizontal position welding skills.
     
  • FAB2070 Gas Metal Arc Welding 1: Students develop an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes, and they gain experience using GMAW processes by performing flat, horizontal and vertical fillet welds and flat groove welds.

HCS 3000 Workplace Safety Systems

Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 9
Credits: 1

In this course, you’ll gain the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to apply health and safety standards in the workplace. This course is a prerequisite for Work Experience 15.

Mechanics & Automotive Services Level 1

Students will develop skills for automotive service and mechanical self-care.

CTS modules covered:

  • MEC1015 Mechanics Tools & Materials: Students develop knowledge, skills and attitudes in the safe use of specialty hand tools, measuring tools and fasteners.
     
  • MEC1020 Vehicle Service & Care: Students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to care for and service a motor vehicle.
     
  • MEC1040 Engine Fundamentals: Students investigate and describe operating principles, construction and applications of engines.
     
  • MEC1090 Electrical Fundamentals: Students identify and describe the operating principles and applications of electricity.
     
  • MEC1165 Mechanics Welding Fundamentals: Students perform metal heating and cutting operations safely using oxyacetylene equipment, and perform non-structural welding using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) equipment.

Mechanics & Automotive Services Level 2

Students will develop skills for automotive service and mechanical self-care.
