Student Responsibilities

Building Futures empowers students and builds connections with the community. To provide students with this opportunity, we must ensure they are completing the academic portion of the program and acting as good role models within the community.

This means:

  • Students will need to be able to work independently and to the best of their ability to reach their academic potential and maintain their grades. 
     
  • The learning environment must be a place with minimal distractions where students can focus on their work. 
     
  • Students are responsible to complete any assignments they miss while learning on the job site portion of the program.

Academic, Behaviour & Safety Standards 

Academics will always be prioritized in Building Futures. Should a student fall behind in their studies, measures will be taken to assist them in catching up. This may mean the student will miss time on-site and/or work on assignments during lunchtime. In extreme cases, teachers and Administration may review the student's compatibility with the program, with the possibility of the student's removal. 

Students must adhere to the professional expectations of Cantiro Homes and any other community partner they work with, and behave appropriately while on site. The house they build together will eventually become somebody's home and needs to be finished to a professional standard.

While on-site, students will be expected to comply with safety standards set out by both Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Parkland School Division. Should students be deemed working unsafely, their behaviour will be corrected with the expectation to comply with instructions immediately. There is no time for long, drawn-out safety debates in a construction zone. Safety is paramount in the Building Futures program. We want all students to have a positive experience and stay safe on the job site.

High School Student Responsibilities

Building Futures is about fostering an environment for students to pursue excellence in both academics and building practices. All students are expected to adhere to the school division expectations, as outlined in the Role of the Student guidelines. As a member of the Building Futures Program, it is important to recognize that within this Program of Choice, it is expected that all students must adhere to these expectations in order to remain active in this program. Student’s found not compliant with the Role of the Student Guidelines will have the following procedures implemented:

Building Futures Probationary Procedure

Step 1: here will be a meeting with the student, the family, the teacher, and administrator to clarify expectations, and devise a plan to correct the area(s) of concern. A review meeting will be set within 10-14 school days to revisit progress and address concerns.

Step 2: In the event Step 1 was unsuccessful in addressing and remedying the area(s) of concern, the student will receive a written warning. This warning will outline the next steps needed to avoid a temporary removal from Building Futures as a program of choice.

Step 3: In the event Step 2 was unsuccessful in addressing the student area(s) of concern, the student will be removed from Building Futures for a period of two weeks. The student remains fully enrolled in all academic courses and construction theory and will attend a designated work area at CFL: Spruce Grove Outreach during their normally scheduled blocks. They will not attend the work site/site time or field trips during this period.

In the event that Step 3 is enacted, a formal meeting will be scheduled with the student, the family, the teacher, and administration to consider the readiness for reinstatement.
