The following CALM, Learning Strategies & Job Preparation courses are available at CFL Summer School. Click on the name of the course to read its description.

Please note:

  • Learning Strategies 15 is NOT a prerequisite for CALM or CALM-combo courses.

  • CALM is listed as a Grade 11 course, as its completion earns students Grade 11-level (20-level) credits. That said, students may take CALM at any time in their high school schedule, including in Grade 10 (which is a common practice). Completion of CALM 20 is a requirement for earning an Alberta High School Diploma.

Career & Life Management (CALM) 20

Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 9 
Credits: 3

Explore the various steps of personal development, and equip yourself with the necessary skills to make healthy, well-informed decisions and choices throughout your life. Themes of the course include personal choices, resource choices, and career and life choices.

Students will leave the course with an online portfolio that includes:

  • Resume & Cover Letter
  • High School Academic Progress 
  • Goal setting, learning preferences, personality, interest, knowledge and motivation profiles that help students explore career pathways 
  • Budget and finance tools 
  • Mental health guides

CALM 20, CTR1010 Job Preparation & HCS3000 Workplace Safety Systems

Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 9
Credits: 5

This course combines CALM 20, Job Preparation and Workplace Safety Systems. 

CALM 20 explores the various steps of personal development, and equips you with the necessary skills to make healthy, well-informed decisions and choices throughout your life. Themes of the course include personal choices, resource choices, career and life choices.

Students will leave the course with an online portfolio that includes:

  • Resume & Cover Letter
  • High School Academic Progress 
  • Goal setting, learning preferences, personality, interest, knowledge and motivation profiles that help students explore career pathways 
  • Budget and finance tools 
  • Mental health guides

In CTR1010 Job Preparation, students develop successful employment search skills and a personal employment search portfolio. 

HCS3000 Workplace Safety Systems allows students to gain the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to apply health and safety standards in the workplace. This is a required prerequisite for Work Experience 15.

Learning Strategies 15

Credits: 5

Learning Strategies is a course designed to assist high school students in developing understandings, literacies, skills, and values to be successful learners across all subject areas. This course directly involves students to respond to their needs in respect to their courses of study. Students will explore, deepen and develop, and eventually apply a range of strategies for academic success. Progressively, students gain confidence, realize independence, and apply their strategies to other learning contexts.

As students transition to the expectations of high school, they will explore, comprehend, and begin to select for their personal learning strategies toolkits a range of learning strategies with direct instruction and guidance from their learning team.

Learning Strategies 25

Prerequisite: Completion of Learning Strategies 15
Credits: 5

Learning Strategies is a course designed to assist high school students in developing understandings, literacies, skills, and values to be successful learners across all subject areas. This course directly involves students to respond to their needs in respect to their courses of study. Students will explore, deepen and develop, and eventually apply a range of strategies for academic success. Progressively, students gain confidence, realize independence, and apply their strategies to other learning contexts.

As students work to become independent and strategically learning high school students, they will analyze, strengthen and continue to apply to their personal learning strategies toolkits with increasing confidence.

Learning Strategies is a course designed to assist high school students in developing understandings, literacies, skills, and values to be successful learners across all subject areas. This course directly involves students to respond to their needs in respect to their courses of study. Students will explore, deepen and develop, and eventually apply a range of strategies for academic success. Progressively, students gain confidence, realize independence, and apply their strategies to other learning contexts.

As students prepare to transition to post-secondary and life-long learning, they will innovate and implement learning strategies with increased independence for successful high school completion and assemble their personalized toolkit that will be beneficial in further learning endeavors.
